The Nature of
Matter
This pancake ice has formed
on a river in Sweden. Pancake
ice forms when surface slush,
arising from snow falling on
water that is already at the
freezing temperature, freezes.
The surface slush collects into
rounded floating pads that col-
lide and separate.
